Gail Whitehead Obituary

Gail Whitehead, 89, of Carmel (formerly Evansville), Indiana died June 14, 2019, in Indianapolis, IN.   She was born Helen Abigail Wright on June 9, 1930 to Robert and Helen Wright in Saginaw, MI.

Gail attended Bosse High School and Evansville College.  She married her best friend and High School sweetheart, Gene, shortly after.  He was the love of her life and they were married for seventy years. She would only choose to leave him in this life in order to prepare their place in eternity. They were a match made in heaven.

Gail was the matriarch, a kind, brave, and generous woman. Together, she and Gene built a family rooted in devotion and laughter. She gave so much and asked for so little in return. Gail was beautiful, strong, and wise. Her love ran deep and wide and with that, she made her family feel more loved every day than most people feel in a lifetime.  She often said she was most proud of being a member of the Whitehead family.

Her fondest childhood memories were centered around living in Michigan and spending time at Clear Lake with her cousins and families.

She witnessed every world-changing event since the Great Depression and she fiercely loved her country.  In her free time, she enjoyed breakfast dates with Gene, outings to a casino, and keeping up with children and grandchildren via Facebook. She enjoyed the simple pleasures in life; a Cardinal’s game on TV with a frosty from Wendy’s would put a smile on her face.  She was a hilarious teller of stories, winner of card games, and handier than a Handyman.

Gail was a remarkable woman who showed us how much she loved us every day of her life. She was our best friend. She was simultaneously the definition of grace filled beauty and elegance.  She was a listener and an even better teacher.  She led by example with her strength and wisdom.  Her love will be carried into the world for years to come.

Gail’s favorite saying was “Your love goes down.” She had a lot of love.

Gail is survived by her beloved husband of 70 years, Gene Whitehead; 5 children, Donna Lynch (Tom), Dan Whitehead, Joe Whitehead (Sheila), all of Evansville, IN, and Julie Hatfield and Sally Hoover (Tom), of Carmel, IN; 20 grandchildren, Abby Cortez, Hilary, Grant, and Griffin Hoover; Chelsea Lernihan, Ryan, Spencer and Daniel Hatfield; Amie Hubbard, Carly Zimmerman, Aaron, and Cliff Whitehead; Eric, Jon, David and Michael Whitehead, and Julia Ray, Ryan, Jim, and David Lynch; and 37 great-grandchildren, who lovingly call her “Gigi”.

Gail was preceded in death by her parents, Helen and Robert Wright, and very special and much beloved daughter-in-law, Dana Whitehead.

There will be a private family Celebration of Life service.
