Joyce Bryan Obituary

Joyce (Rollins) Bryan, age 75, of Newburgh, IN, passed away at 10:20 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital.

Joyce was born August 19, 1942, in Blandville, KY, to Denver and Billie (Jackson) Rollins. Joyce grew up on a farm in Western Kentucky and in the Baptist Church where her dad was normally the song leader.  Joyce was often seen sitting on the front row as she was mischievous.  Many times she made faces at her dad trying to make him laugh as he led the congregation in song.  Denver was kind hearted and never got upset with Joyce over her mischievous ways.  Joyce and her dad never missed an opportunity to play a game of checkers, so Joyce, “I am sure your dad will have a game set up for your arrival!”

Joyce graduated from Ballard Memorial High School. She married her loving husband, Jim Bryan, on July 11, 1964 and the next year gave up the opportunity to attend Nursing school when Jim’s job took them to Colorado.  After starting their family, Joyce was a stay at home Mom to the girls and enjoyed taking them to activities and spending quality time with them.  As the girls got older, Joyce was active in the Eastern Star which enabled her to participate with her daughters in the Rainbow Chapter for girls.

Prior to moving to Indiana, Joyce was active in her church, serving as the Sunday School Superintendent and on the Board.  She also served on other groups as well.  Joyce became a “Duke of Paducah” and “Kentucky Colonel” in 1976.

Joyce became active in the Women of the Moose, Newburgh Chapter 1326 in 1997.  She served in various offices, including Senior Regent.  Later, Joyce was elevated to the College of Regents, earning the black gown and Red Stoll of her degree.  For the past several years, she has been active in the Indiana Moose Association 8th District, raising money at each District Meeting.  Many members automatically got out their $5 when they approached her.  Joyce was also a member of WOTM Chapter 1341, Mt. Vernon and the Kapperman Post 44 Auxiliary in Newburgh.

Joyce worked in Sears Appliance Service as a dispatcher and later at Northwestern Mutual Life.

Joyce was a proud “Nana” to her grandkids, who loved her “mashed potatoes and fried chicken.” They were the light of her life and she will definitely be missed by all.

She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years; daughters, Janet Harbert (Joe) of Newburgh, IN and Jenifer Gossman of Evansville, IN; sister, Rita Bonee (David) of Paducah, KY; brothers, Stephen Rollins (Sue) of Wickliffe, KY and Joe Rollins (Dee) of Atlanta, GA; and grandchildren, April, Ryan and Jordyn Gossman and Sarah Harbert.

She is preceded in death by her parents and 2 sisters.
