Alfred August Berning, Jr.

Alfred August Berning, Jr., age 84, of Evansville, IN, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at Linda E. White Hospice House.

Alfred was born October 11, 1941, in Evansville, IN, to Alfred A. Berning, Sr. and Isabell L. (Magnus) Berning. He graduated from Central High School and was proud to continue his education and earn several Degrees. He married Lena B. Jardine in Ipswich, England on May 15, 1963. Alfred proudly served as Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force for over 20 years, including during the Vietnam War, before retiring in 1982. He also served as an Instructor in Mechanics during his time with the Air Force. He later worked for Niehaus Industrial Sales & Supply for 20 years as a Fork Truck Mechanic before retiring a second time in 2002. In his younger years, Alfred and Lena enjoyed traveling. He enjoyed collecting post cards, sports cards, and especially coins. He loved sports and was an avid Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears fan.

Alfred is survived by his daughter, Angela Grace Jackson (Dave); sons, Alan D. Berning and Derek K. Berning; sister, Tonya Berning Mitz; grandchildren, Jennifer, Heather (Jacob), Erica, Travis (Destiny), Erin, Brianna, Sheri, and Alishia; great grandchildren, Jaxon, Liam, Levi, Addison, Braxton, Gabi, Korro, Everst, Emilee, Cameron, Madison, Robert, Landen, Ryleigh, and Peyton; and several nieces and nephews.

Alfred is preceded in death by his parents; loving wife of 61 years, Lena Berning, who passed away January 3, 2025; sons, Raymond Alexander Berning, who passed away in 2012, Eric Karl Berning, who passed away in 1972; brother-in-law, James “Tony” Mitz; granddaughter, Christian Brewer; and great granddaughter, Aubrey Jackson.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue with Pastor Tommy Epperson officiating. Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery where the American Legion Kapperman Post 44 will render Military Rites.

Friends may visit from 10:00 a.m. until service time, Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel.
