Alfred Grabhorn Obituary

Alfred H. Grabhorn, age 92, of Newburgh, IN, passed away at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, March 6, 2020, at home.

Alfred was born September 19, 1927, in Evansville, IN, to Alfred H. and Freida (Muehlenbein) Grabhorn. He graduated from Reitz High School in 1944.  After high school, he worked at the L & N and NYC railroad until joining the military, serving in WWII with the 13th Army Air Corp in the Philippines.  Upon returning from the military, he went back to the railroad and enrolled and graduated from the University of Evansville, Indiana University, and attended Boston College. After graduation, he taught math at Bosse High School from 1952 to 1987, retiring as Department Head.

Starting in 1957, he and fellow Bosse teacher, Ted Hitch, shared leadership in the Evansville Teachers Federal Credit Union as the only employees.  As ETFCU expanded, they moved to the Reed Building, eventually outgrowing it and purchasing the location on Theatre Drive.  After leaving ETFCU, he taught part-time at the University of Southern Indiana until retiring from Bosse in 1987.  He then taught full-time at USI until retiring in 1989.

He was a member and Trustee of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Phi Zeta, American Legion Kapperman Post 44, Kentucky Colonels and RHCC.

Alfred is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Doris (Barnett) Grabhorn; son David Grabhorn of Evansville, IN; daughter, Joan Oldham of Boonville, IN; granddaughter, Car Slevin of Mission, KS, and son, Steve Woods of Newburgh, IN.

Alfred is preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn (Bayer) Grabhorn; parents; brother, Earl, and sister, Helen.
