Benjamin E. Newman Jr., age 96, of Evansville, IN, passed away at 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, 2021.
Benjamin was born December 30, 1924, in Evansville, IN, to Benjamin E. Newman Sr. and Lucille J. Schlavick.
He graduated from Bosse High School in 1943 and married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Mae Heierman.
Benjamin was a Veteran in the United States Marine Corps and served during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre, 4th Marine Division, Company B. He survived Saipan, but was later wounded on the island of Tinian. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his service. He was a member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local #136 and retired on December 31, 1986. Benjamin devoted his life to his family.
Benjamin is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Nan and Randy Koehnen of Cairo, KY; son and daughter-in-law, Reece and Mary Claire Newman of Destin, FL; grandchildren, Clint Newman (Jennifer) of Nashville, TN, Natalie Shelor of Knoxville, TN and Kirk Newman (Elizabeth) of Knoxville, TN; 9 great grandchildren, Blake Shelor, Julia Shelor, Victoria Newman, Pierce Newman, Brooklyn Newman, Addison Newman, Emmersen Newman, Jackson Newman, and Kameron Newman.
Benjamin was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy in 2010; a son, Ben Newman
in 1970; a granddaughter, DeeDee Koehnen and grandson, Ben Koehnen, both in 2005.
A Special mention of his loving and devoted companion of 10 years, Sylvia Angermeier and dear family friend, Hasan Afshari.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 13, 2021, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue with Reverend Shane O’Neil officiating.
