Bess Lee (Hammers) Levy, 98, of Evansville, passed away on September 3, 2022, at home.
Bess was a member of Temple Adath B’nai Israel. She worked for Permanent Federal Savings and Loan for a number of years and subsequently volunteered with Patchwork Central. Bess loved her family and friends unconditionally and always was quick to tell us as much in word and deed. She also loved music and the arts, and had an adventurous soul, enjoying visits to new places and trying new foods. Bess appreciated a good (and even a bad) joke and her infectious, easy laughter will be terribly missed.
Bess is survived by sons, David Tait Busler (Angela Mary) of Evansville, Andrew Levy (Sally Sheinfeld) of New York City, and Jeffrey Levy (Diana Khachaturian) of Sacramento; daughter, Diane K. Levy (Joanne Sincero) of Washington, DC; sister, Nancy Jane Erich (Bob) of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Steven Church (Christy) of Nashville, Jonathan Israel Levy (Linsey) of Sacramento, Daniel Reuven Levy of San Francisco, CA, Gita Sheinfeld Levy and Sadie Sheinfeld Levy both of New York City; great grandson Sterling Meyer Levy of Sacramento; great grandchildren, Ashley Smith (Ira), Weston Elrod (Andrea), Jacob Elrod (Kayla) and Shelby Kirby (Kyle); great great-grandchildren, Wilder and Wells Smith of Franklin, TN; and several nieces and nephews and dear friends.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Henry C. Levy, on April 23, 2005; parents, T. Leslie and Zora Ann (Staples) Hammers; and siblings, Nina L. Tait, Lloyd L. Hammers, Lula M. Sproatt, Icy Mae Jones, and William T. Hammers.
The family wishes to thank Wanda Umphries for the kindness and care she provided Bess for over two years. Staff of Heart to Heart Hospice and VNA Plus also provided excellent care over the last several years, which supported Bess’ wish to remain at home.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 8, 2022, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Ave. Graveside services will be private.
