Carl Leon Marriott, age 81, of Evansville, IN, passed away at 4:13 p.m. on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital.
Carl was born March 25, 1940, in Browns, IL, to Edward Grant Marriott and Mabel Marie (Wiseman) Marriott. He graduated from Edwards County High School in Albion, IL, and took college courses related to marketing, surveying and farming. Carl was a long-time member of Bluegrass Methodist Church in Evansville, IN. When he resided in Illinois, he was a long-time member of Fortney Methodist Church in Grayville, IL.
Carl was a lifetime farmer, both in Illinois and Indiana. He was also a truck driver for TSC Trucking in Evansville for several years and Rudd Heavy Equipment for 11 years, retiring from trucking in 2009.
Carl believed in promoting and sustaining farming methods and farm families.
Carl was a member of the Illinois Farm Bureau for 61 years, serving in Local and State positions as President, Chairman and Chairman of the Board. He was instrumental in fundraising for the Edwards County Farm Bureau Office. While Chairman of the State Young Farmers, he organized a European Marketing Tour to Portugal, Spain, France, West Germany, Belgium, Holland and England, teaching farming techniques and the importance of exporting.
Carl was active in the Edwards County Soil and Water Conservation District, also serving as its Chairman. He and his family were awarded the District Family of the Year in 1976.
Carl was active in the American Soybean Association for 30 years, serving as Vice President and member of the Executive Board. His leadership activities included trips to Poland, Yugoslavia, West Germany, and Mexico.
Carl was politically active in farm related issues, testifying before the State and National Congresses over 20 times.
Carl was awarded Master Farmer of Illinois by Prairie Farmer Magazine and Outstanding Young Man of America.
Carl never met a stranger and loved talking to people. He considered all his friends as family. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to tease. When he had a white beard, he would wear a Santa hat through the Christmas season, to the delight of all the kids. He enjoyed volunteering at the Bluegrass “Feed My Sheep” program and loved visiting with the kids at the Home For Your Heart Preschool there.
Carl is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jane Ellen (Wolfe) Marriott; daughters, Julie Welden (Tom) and Karen Marriott (Larry Newell); son, Daniel Carl Marriott (Cara); grandchildren, Olivia Scott-Harre, Alexander Scott, Henry Grant Marriott, Drew Marie Marriott, and Claire Louise Marriott; great-grandchildren, Cristian Welden, Juliet Welden and Spencer Scott-Kuhen; and many nieces and nephews.
Carl is preceded in death by his parents, Edward Grant and Mabel Marie Marriott; sisters, Ruth Wiseman and Laura Ibbotson; and grandson, Brian Welden.
Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Monday, December 6, 2021, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue with Reverend Doug Heiman officiating.
