Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Kendall Obituary

Elizabeth Anne “Betty” (Hazel) Kendall of Evansville, IN, passed Thursday, January 19, 2023, at The Evansville Protestant Home.

Betty was born in Paducah, KY, to Joseph E. and Annie E. (Summerville) Hazel. She attended three schools in KY, NE, and WV due to her father’s profession in the newspaper business that took him to different papers in different states. Betty graduated from High School in WV. Working, then marrying her husband, Clark, who was a Professional Executive for the Boy Scouts of America for 39 years. Promotions sent them to one city in WV, two cities in KY, three cities in IL, and two cities in IN before retiring in Evansville, IN, 1988.

Betty was a 1996 Breast Cancer survivor the same year Clark started Alzheimers, and then other medical issues followed. Annually, she supported the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure.

Betty was a Christian who depended on prayer her whole life. She was a strong believer that without God, prayer, and a sense of humor, friends, and kind and thoughtful strangers, she could never have gotten through life and lived so long.

Her special joy in life before and after working a number of years as a dental assistant was helping others as a volunteer in childcare, Boy Scouting (Den Mother), Girl Scouting (Brownie Leader), PTA (Picture Lady and Student Health Aid), CCD (Teacher two times), working with the blind in IN and IL, and helping Evansville State Hospital. Later, when Clark needed to move to The Evansville Protestant Home for his last six years of life, she was able to help with his care. Her greatest regret in life as she aged was for her health not allowing her to do the volunteer work that she so greatly loved.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Kay Kendall (Keith Johansen); son, Joseph “Joe” Kendall (Julie); nieces, Paula Payton and Jackie Cominotte; nephews, Dave Boqumil (Sharon) and Bob Hazel (Wendy Hoonier); Amy Feather, who was like a wonderful granddaughter for over 20 years; friends, Daniel Kisner, Sheri Williams, Judy Schmidt, and Mike Rayburn; many helpful employees at the Lawndale Schucks and the Sears in Washington Square Mall; and friends for over 50 years in PA, GA, and IL.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Annie Hazel; husband of 53 years, S. Clark Kendall, who passed away in 2002; infant sister, Virginia Hazel; and special older brother, Joe Hazel.

Betty would like to say a special thank you to John and Martha Maier at Boone Funeral Home for helping her when her husband, Clark, passed away. She would also like to express her appreciation and thanks to all the following for helping her in her late senior years when her needs were very great: Amy Feather and Daniel Kisner (caregivers) and Debbie and David Shenk (special neighbors). Thank you also to her doctors and their staff: Dr. Mark Browning, Dr. Stephen Fischer, Dr. Karl Sash, Dr. E. Kasha, Dr. Larry Woods, and Dr. Danile Emerson. She can’t say “Thank you” enough to all at The Evansville Protestant Home for the loving care they gave her and Clark. “May God bless all who helped me through life’s journey.”
