Gary Rinehart, 85, of Evansville, Indiana, was peacefully called home to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, July 31, 2026, surrounded by family.
Born on April 22, 1941, to Cecil and Emily (Holder) Rinehart, Gary graduated from North High School in 1959. He earned his bachelor's degree in Education from the former Evansville College, and later his master's from Indiana State University.
Teaching was never simply a career; it was his calling. His entire education journey unfolded at Vogel Elementary School. He first walked its halls as a kindergarten student, returned to complete his student teaching, and then spent nearly four decades shaping young hearts with laughter, creativity, and the kind of dedication that kids remember forever. A natural craftsman, Gary brought skill and creativity to every project he touched. For years he designed and constructed sets for the summer musical, bringing stories to life on stage with the same care and dedication he gave everything else.
Gary was a faithful member of Crossroads Christian Church for many years. Alongside his wife, Ruth Ann, he participated in his 2:42 Bible study and faithfully served wherever he was needed. Whether building elaborate stage sets for church productions, supporting countless ministry events, or encouraging others through prayer, Gary gave generously of his time and talents. He especially cherished the church's music ministry, where his son, David, served as Music Director.
Gary never met a stranger, and every conversation was likely to end with a story, a smile, or a laugh. His grandchildren will forever treasure the one-of-a-kind sayings that only "Papaw Gary" could deliver.
Gary's greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his son, Shawn Rinehart (Hannah); daughter, Sara Rinehart McAtee (Chad); grandchildren Tatem, Jonas, Scarlett, Josie, Rylie, Ellison, Ayden, and Adler; great-grandchildren Claire and Lana; sister, Kathy Hansen (Lonnie); brother-in-law, David Girton (Marion); sister-in-law, Jan McCollum; and many beloved nieces and nephews, including Chris, Katie, Kristen, Jenny, David, Megan, and Haley.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Ann (Girton) Rinehart; his son, David Rinehart; his granddaughter, Sophie Rinehart; his brother, Richard Rinehart; and his parents, Cecil and Emily Rinehart.
A Celebration of Gary's Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Crossroads Christian Church, 10800 Lincoln Avenue, Newburgh, Indiana, with Pastors Phil Heller officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 7, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., and again Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service, both in the Chapel at Crossroads Christian Church.
