Helen Futrell Obituary

Helen Marie (Deitz) Futrell, age 93, of Evansville, Indiana passed away Saturday April 4, 2026, at the home of her daughter, Terry.

Helen was born December 19, 1932, in Shawneetown, Illinois, to James Leonard and Mabel Ellen (Maynard) Deitz. She graduated from Mater Dei High School in 1951, and was Salutatorian of her senior class. She worked at the original Libs Chocolate shop downtown. After high school, Helen married Robert Futrell on June 30, 1951, after he’d received his draft notice for the Army. Two weeks after they were married, he had to report. Helen, being the independent woman she was, drove all the way across the country to Colorado to meet him when he was discharged. Helen and Robert built a beautiful life together. They had four children together and were very active in their lives. They were long time members of the former Washington Avenue Baptist Church, and co-founding members of Creekside Baptist Church. Helen's heart was for missions, in which she was very active with the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU) through the church, locally and state wide. After her children were grown, she led the children’s church camp as the director at Washington Avenue Baptist Church. Additionally, she led Sunday school groups for both women and children. Helen loved the Lord and touched many lives for Jesus.

Helen is survived by her three daughters, Vicki (Barry) McMaster, Terry (Kenny) Martin, and Carolyn Miller; one son, James (Melanie) Futrell; her seven grandchildren, Derrick (Lisa) Dillinger, Joelle (Chadd) Baugher, Jennifer (Jeff) Goebel, Megan (Lemy) Nacisse, Ashley (Jeremy) Volk, Rachel (Jeremiah) Johnson and Brianna (Justin) Sturgeon; 17 great grandchildren, Ethan, Zach (August Hendricks), Addison, Jared (Rachel Bryan), Malerie (Jayden Seitz), Chance, Kelubai, Kalea, Eliam, Amayah, Cameron, Kaleigh, Allyson, Ella, Calie (Conner Lee), Lyla, and Blake; her 3 great great grandchildren, Brinlee, Kai, Jace, and one on the way; her sister, Dorothy “Dot” Gibson; her half siblings, Eddie Ray Dietz and Karen Kirchner.

Helen is preceded in death by her late husband, Robert Futrell; her parents; her brothers, Bill, Johnny and Bobby, and her half-sister, Irma Fields.
