Hershel Dewey Holtzclaw, Jr., age 79, of Newburgh, IN, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at Linda E. White Hospice House.
Dewey was born July 13, 1945, in Carmi, IL, to Hershel Dewey Holtzclaw, Sr. and Juanita Belle (Bradshaw) Purcell. He graduated from Castle High School and was a Vietnam Veteran, serving in the United States Navy. He was a faithful member of Washington Avenue Church of Christ for over 35 years, and he loved reading his Bible. Dewey met the love of his life, Sherry, while working for Indiana Bell (now AT&T). He later retired after 38 years of working as a Central Office Technician. He enjoyed working outdoors – mowing his lawn and tending to his Vinca flower garden, watching his Cowboy shows with his father-in-law, and he especially loved fried chicken and Coke and his black cat, Arthur. Dewey loved his family.
Dewey is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Sheryl “Sherry” Kay (Ethridge) Holtzclaw; son, Jason D. Arvin (Valarie) of Henderson, KY; sisters, Paulette Powell of Greenville, KY, and Samantha Maxwell of Pukalini, HI; brother, Richard Holtzclaw (Rebecca) Central City, KY; parents-in-law, William “Bill” Ethridge, Sr. and Doris “Dolly” Ethridge of Evansville, IN; brothers-in-law, William “Billy” Ethridge, Jr. (Pamela) of Evansville, IN, and Gregory “Greg” Ethridge (Cheryl) of Posey County, IN; grandchildren, Nicholas D. Arvin, Mason Henry Arvin, and Natalie Arvin; and many nieces and nephews.
Dewey is preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Dinah Faircloth.
Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Thursday, June 26, 2025, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue with Jerome Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery where the American Legion Kapperman Post 44 will render Military Honors.
Friends may visit from 10:00 a.m. until service time, Thursday, June 26, 2025, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel.
