Ira L. Harris, III, age 74, of Evansville, IN, passed away Thursday morning, January 20, 2022, at home, surrounded by his family.
Ira was born January 13, 1948, in Evansville, IN, to the late Ira L., Jr. and Laura M. (Yancey) Harris. He graduated from Central High School in 1966 and went on to earn his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education from the University of Evansville. Ira was a lifelong member of First Southern Baptist Church where he taught nearly every age group. He worked as a zookeeper through college. Ira loved all things Central High School, Willard Library, and First Southern. He taught Social Studies for 42 years, mostly at Central. Once a Bear, always a Bear!
Ira is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Phyllis (Fleeger) Harris; sons, Matthew Harris and Luke Harris; brother, Lloyd Harris (Nancy); honorary grandchildren, Ashlynn, Joey, Zahara, and Olivia Goodman; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 24, 2022, at First Southern Baptist Church, 25 South Cullen Avenue, Evansville, with Pastor David Cullison officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Friends may visit from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Sunday, January 23, 2022, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue, Evansville, and from 9:00 a.m. until service time, Monday, January 24, 2022, at First Southern Baptist Church.
