James (Jim) A. (Sonny) Hines, Sr., age 94, of Evansville, IN, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at The Village at Hamilton Pointe.
Sonny was born June 5, 1930, in Earlington, KY, to Joseph N. Mason and Hannah B. (Landers) Davis. He was a charter member of Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church where he was part of the men’s choir for a brief time. Sonny was a Veteran in the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. In his younger years, he worked as a tailor for Robert Hall Clothing Company and as a factory worker for Peerless Pottery. He later worked as a Mill Operator for Red Spot Paint Factory for many years before retiring in 1996, and his favorite job was working as a Part-Time Security Guard for the Evansville Art Museum Downtown. Sonny enjoyed fishing, as well as playing Dominoes, Spades, and Tonk.
Sonny is survived by his daughters, Dana Hines, Ruby Bilal, and Annette Littles; sons, Darryl Hines (Essie) and James Sutton (Lori); sisters, Wilma Berry (Lawrence) and Anita Lenorr (Charles); brothers, Joe Mason, Ralph Mason, and Ed Martin; grandchildren, Imani, Reid, Michael, Jason, Dana, Rasheed, De’Yana, Tyrese, Dontae, Demario, Tiara, Michael, Alex, Tamara, Shannon, Quincy, Ja’Drien, and Aaliyah; and a host of great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Sonny is preceded in death by his parents; loving wife of 23 years, Faye Ann (Sutton) Hines, who passed away in 1998; daughter, Geraldine Hines; son, James (Junie) Hines, Jr.; and one granddaughter.
Homegoing Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 5, 2024, at Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church, 867 E. Walnut Street, Evansville, with Reverend Larry Rascoe, Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park where the American Legion Kapperman Post 44 will render military rites.
Friends may visit from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue, Evansville and from 10:00 a.m. until service time, Thursday, September 5, 2024, at Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church.
