She attended Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and studied portraiture, drawing and sculpting, as well as oil painting, still life, acrylic and oriental brushwork. Her watercolors range from established techniques to wet on wet, as well as expressionistic and impressionistic works, capturing the tenuous colors in contemporary concepts of sand, sea, sky, wind, field of flowers, created in her original technique and style.
She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Diocese of Grace Cathedral and President of Grace Cathedral Episcopal Churchwomen of San Francisco, California that was indeed an honor, worthwhile and rewarding. As mother wrote in her notes, “Looking forward to a sip of sherry and a hot cup of tea, was more than a happening, it was ‘life’ in a Big City that could be lonely without the touch of human love, and association with others…to the Glory of God. The joy of gatherings to sing and pray together provided a Blessing of ‘peace and joy’ long to be remembered and savored by many who became life long friends.” She was thankful for the Blessing to be of service, Signed Jane Lola Porteous, President and V.P. of Deanery of San Francisco Diocese of California. Jane was very community minded having formed her own real estate company, Homes Beautiful Real Estate, in St. Louis, Missouri. She was the secretary to the Rotary Club of St. Louis for many years, also the administrator of Southeast Hospital in So. Laguna, California to 200 doctors.
