Obituary

Jane Alice (Wibbeler) Schmitt, age 96, of Evansville, IN, passed away at 4:00 a.m. on Friday, March 3, 2023, at Heritage Center – Holiday Health Care.

Jane was born January 21, 1927, in Evansville, IN, to Wesley A. and Amelia B. (Fenneman) Wibbeler. She attended Henry Reis High School and graduated from Central High School Downtown. Jane worked as a Secretary at Ingleheart Brothers, Inc. in Evansville, IN, Jell-O Research Laboratory in Tarrytown, NY, General Foods Corp. in White Plains, NY, and Ohio Valley Coal Co. in Evansville, IN.

Jane was a member of Methodist Temple before moving to Tarrytown, NY. She was a member of Woodbridge United Methodist Church in Woodbridge, NJ, and has been a member of Central United Methodist Church for 53 years. She volunteered at her church as Membership Chairman and worked in the office for 40 years and was a Deaconess Auxiliary Volunteer for many years. She was a Sunday School teacher and youth leader. Jane volunteered alongside her husband, Norman, with youth camps for Santa Claus United Methodist Campground for 30 years. During the Korean War, she served as a hostess at the USO and was president of the volunteers serving cake and sandwiches to Servicemen coming to Evansville from Camp Breckinridge.

Jane is survived by her son, Stan Schmitt; daughter, Brenda Lowey; son-in-law, Tom Lowey; grandson, Tim Lowey; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Jane is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Norman Phineas Schmitt, who passed away in 2020; parents, Wesley and Amelia Wibbeler; infant brother, Loren Harold Wibbeler; and sister, Louanna Mae Wilmoth.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue with Pastor Dewey Miller officiating. Burial will be in Santa Claus Cemetery, Santa Claus, IN.

Friends may visit from 10:00 a.m. until service time, Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel.
