Janet Martin Obituary

Janet A. (Roberts) Martin died on November 25, 2021, after a short illness. Janet and her twin sister Jean were born on August 24, 1928, to Henry O. “Hank” and Alice Roberts.

Janet graduated from Bosse High School where she formed lifelong friendships. She played bridge every month for more than 60 years with Bosse friends. The original group expanded inviting other friends to join over the years.

Her passion for children led Janet to earn a degree in education from Evansville College (now the University of Evansville) and her master’s in education from Indiana University. Her first teaching job was in Elkhart, but she soon returned to Evansville where she was an outstanding kindergarten teacher for EVSC retiring in 1988. Janet was instrumental in teaching the next generation of educators by mentoring student teachers many years.

Janet married the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Martin in 1954. They soon had two children Rebecca Lynn (Becky) and Ronald Lee (Ronnie). Dick was an avid golfer, so Janet learned the game in order to play as a couple on Sundays at Rolling Hills. She loved playing golf and soon played more than Dick. Janet won several tournaments over the years.

Janet and Dick were blessed with three delightful grandchildren – Matt and Rick Murray and McKenzie Martin. She played an important role in their lives and helped raise McKenzie. Janet was also blessed to get to know her wonderful great-grandchildren Sebastian, Benjamin, and Remi Murray.

Janet was a caregiver and always looked after family and friends. During health challenges, she was a key caregiver for her parents, Dick’s parents (Don and Doris Martin), her husband Dick, her sister Jean, and her son Ronnie. In spite of challenges these situations created, Janet always had a positive and caring attitude. She was a saint for her family and friends.

Janet joined Methodist Temple when it opened and remained a member throughout her life. She enjoyed worshipping with friends until COVID struck.

Janet is survived by her daughter, Becky Murray (Jim); grandchildren, Matt Murray (Tracy), Rick Murray (Candace) and McKenzie Martin; great grandchildren, Sebastian, Benjamin, and Remi Murray; a niece who helped care for her, Linda Thomas; nieces Kathy Kleindorfer (Steve Wolf) and Kris Beard (Jim); great nephew, Bill Forston (Lisa); great niece, Lisa Beard; and Karen Wright (McKenzie’s mother). Of note is the great interest she took in the lives of every family member --- she was an incredibly loving matriarch.

In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Richard “Dick” Martin, her son, Ronnie Martin; her sister, Jean Kleindorfer; her husband’s parents, Don and Doris Martin; her sister-in-law; Norma Rhodes; and her beloved dog, Hurley.
