Jerry Ilbern Jones, age 80, of Evansville, IN, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2024, at St. Vincent Hospital.
Jerry was born May 27, 1943, in Evansville, IN, to the late John and Elizabeth (Buehler) Jones. He taught mathematics at McGary School for the EVSC for over 31 years and even substituted for an additional 14 years. Jerry’s students adored him and even now, they would sing high praises such as “Mr. Jones was the BEST teacher that they ever had.”
Jerry loved to hunt, cut grass, watch IU basketball, care for his chickens, and work in his vegetable garden. His partner in crime was his twin brother, Jerald, and thus were known as the Jones Boys to many. Jerry cared deeply for his family, friends – especially Rance Ossenberg and McGary Middle School. He had a knack of communicating with his students that conveyed that he wasn’t just their caring teacher, but he saw the good that existed in each individual. Jerry was loved by so many. Opinionated with a touch of redneckness were a part of his makeup for sure.
Jerry is survived by his children, Denise Utley (Aaron) and Jeffrey Jones (Samantha); step daughter, Kayla Burton (Justin); grandchildren, Courtney, Natasha, Jacinta, Luke, Alex, Taylor, Gracee, Preslee, and Brantley; great grandchildren, Jace and Kaylee; and handsome twin brother, Jerald (Becky).
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents; step son; and wife, Gloria whom he grieved to his dying day.
