John Lee Newman

John Lee Newman, age 90, of Evansville, IN, passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2019, at Deaconess Midtown Hospital.

John was the only son of John L. and Irma (Hicks) Newman. He was born in 1929 in Evansville, IN. John graduated from Bosse High School in 1946 and Indiana University with his Bachelor of Business. He was Phi Beta Kappa. John was a member of Methodist Temple UMC.

John became President and CEO of the John L. Newman Co., Inc., a building material company located in Evansville, IN, upon the death of his father in 1965. He was a sixty six year member of Reed Masonic Lodge #316 F & AM; Scottish Rite 33rd Degree Mason, Hadi Shrine Temple, No Ruz Grotto, Royal Order of Scotland and Bethlehem White Shrine of Jerusalem #2. John was a Past Patron of Robert Morris Chapter #87 Order of the Eastern Star, Secretary of the Board of Governors of the 32nd Degree Masonic Dyslexia Learning Center for Children in Evansville, IN and Assembly “Pop” of the Rainbow Girls #3.

John was a former Director of National City Bank, former member of St. Mary’s Center Foundation Board, A Life Trustee of the University of Evansville, and University of Southern Indiana Foundation for Students. John was one of the founders of Friday Night Dance Club. He loved to play bridge and clabber.

John is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Lupheba “Phebe”; 2 daughters, Janalee Bootz (Tom) of Evansville, IN and Cheryl Ann Newman (Perry Lynch) of Louisville, KY; 2 grandsons, Ryan Bootz (Lori) of Newburgh, IN and Bradford Bootz (JoBeth) of Evansville, IN; and 6 great grandchildren, Kendall, Rebekah, Parker, Ellie, Preston and Porter Bootz.

John is preceded in death by his parents, 2 uncles and 2 aunts.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 4, 2019 at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue with Reverend Andy Payton officiating. Entombment will be in Park Lawn Mausoleum, Georgian Chapel.  

Friends may visit from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Sunday, November 3, 2019 at BOONE FUNERAL HOME EAST CHAPEL where the Hadi Shrine will conduct a walk through at 4:45 p.m. followed by 33rd Degree Masonic walk through and Reed Masonic Lodge #316 will conduct a memorial service at 5:00 p.m.
