John Owen Wells, age 91, of Evansville, IN, passed away Friday, June 10, 2022, at home, surrounded by his family.
John was born October 31, 1930, in Monroe, WI, to the late Harry and Sara (Blackburn) Wells. He graduated from Sheldon High School in 1948, and earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Grinnell College in 1952. After graduation, John was in the United States Army in Korea where he served as a Radio Operator. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service. John earned his Master’s Degree with Honors in Retailing from The University of Pittsburg in 1955.
John came to Evansville from Cleveland, OH, in 1961 to join DeJong’s Store where he later became the Chief Executive Officer of the company in 1980.
John joined Citizens Bank Trust Department in 1983, becoming a Certified Financial Planner – Trust Officer and a Vice President in 1989. John retired from the bank in 1994.
He was a member of Faith Bible Church, Rolling Hills Country Club, former Chairman of the boards of Goodwill Inc., and the Goodwill Foundation, former board member of the Rescue Mission, former board member of Welborn Baptist Hospital and The Welborn Foundation, and one of the Founding Directors of Leadership Evansville.
John is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Carol (Showalter) Wells; son, Peter Wells (Linda) (Dallas, TX); daughter, Jane Wells May (Ron) (Chicago, IL); grandchildren, Derek Williams (Dallas, TX), Cami (Wells) DeMetrotion (Brett) (Austin, TX), Sarah May (London, England), Lizzy May (Oakland, CA), and Emily May (Chicago, IL); and great grandson, Jaxon DeMetrotion (Austin, TX).
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at Faith Bible Church at 5601 Oak Hill Road, Evansville, IN, with Pastor Bryce Beale officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery where the American Legion Kapperman Post 44 will render full military rites.
Friends may visit from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Monday, June 13, 2022, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue, Evansville, IN.
