Joyce Brothers Obituary

Joyce Brothers, age 86, of Newburgh, IN, went home to be with the Lord at 9:56 a.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at Evansville Protestant Home.

Joyce was born September 1, 1938, in Bristol, Tennessee, to Reverend J. Howard Clayman and Mary F. (O’Neal) Clayman. She graduated from Reitz High School. She became the church organist at age 16 at Washington Avenue Baptist Church and served alongside her husband in music ministry for 44 years, at Calvary Baptist Church for 6 years, and the last 14 years at Covert Avenue Baptist Church. Joyce was financial secretary of the church, private secretary for the pastor and a Sunday School teacher for kindergarteners. Joyce was an avid reader and shared her books with many others. Joyce was a people person and loved spending time with her family and friends. She had a love for gospel music and attended many of The National Quartet Conventions. 

Joyce is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Joe Schmitt; nieces, Cate Morrison (Tom), Karen Felty; nephew, James Clayman (Kathy); special friends, Randy and Norma Fleeger; and many other family members and friends.

Joyce is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Orlanda Brothers; parents, Reverend J. Howard and Mary Clayman; in-laws, Ernest and Marjorie; and brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Dorothy Clayman.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, December 16, 2024, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue with Bro. Michael Thompson and Bro. Robert Fulkerson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.

Friends may visit from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m., Sunday, December 15, 2024, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Monday, December 16, 2024, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Robert Rusche, the staff of Evansville Protestant Home, and Aseracare Hospice for their compassionate care.
