Katherine Smith Obituary

Katherine (Raven) Smith, 94, of Evansville, IN, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 26, 2025, at the Evansville Protestant Home. Katherine was born in Lamar, IN, on October 22, 1930, to the late Loren and Elizabeth (Schroeder) Raven and was raised in Chrisney, IN.  Katherine graduated from Chrisney High School in 1948 and, in 1949, married Guy Smith, Jr. Katherine and Guy would travel together through life’s adventures for 63 years.

Katherine worked for many years in accounting, payroll, and administration. Most of those years were enjoyed at Hocker Power Brakes. Katherine was a long-time member of Christ Church United Church of Christ and of St. John’s East United Church of Christ, and she enjoyed many years of membership at the Evansville Kennel Club. Katherine served on the PTA and as a sports booster at Plaza Park Elementary School and Harrison High School. In her spare time, Katherine enjoyed being a teammate in several bowling leagues, and she and Guy loved spending evenings dining out and playing bridge with friends.  Katherine was known as a wonderful cook, and she spent countless hours needlepointing beautiful family heirlooms. Katherine and Guy followed the University of Evansville Aces, the Indiana University Hoosiers, and the St. Louis Cardinals, and they were also blessed to have traveled extensively throughout the United States, the Caribbean, and Europe.

With a gentle spirit and an intrepid sense of adventure, Katherine devoted her life to family, friendship, and discovery. Her days were brightened by laughter shared across the kitchen table.  Her legacy is woven through the lives of those who knew her best—marked by kindness, encouragement, and a steadfast belief in the wonder of new experiences.

Katherine is survived by her daughter, Julie Cobbs and her husband, Gene, of Evansville; granddaughters, Kelsey Cobbs (St. Louis, MO) and Hayley Cobbs (Evansville); her brother, Albert Raven, of Newburgh and his wife, Claudia; and several nieces and nephews.

Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, Loren and Elizabeth (Schroeder) Raven; her loving husband, Guy Smith, Jr.; her sister, Wilma (Raven) Sibrel; her brother, Walter Raven; and a niece, Rebecca Raven.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Evansville Protestant Home and AseraCare Hospice for the care and compassion Katherine was shown over the last three months.
