Leon Anthony Weber, 89, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away at his home on April 20, 2026, in the company of his children.
Born in Chrisney, Indiana, Leon was one of eight children. He grew up on a farm, where he and his five brothers and two sisters shared a single “dipper,” as he used to say. Leon loved making people laugh with tales from his childhood through adult years. He always had a story to tell, and most of them were true.
Throughout his childhood and teen years, Leon played all sports but excelled at basketball.
After he graduated from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Korea. Shortly after he returned home, he stopped by Pud’s, where he locked eyes with Beverly Wetherill, whom he had known in high school. They got married in 1958 and went on to have two children, Mike and Julie.
Leon earned his bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Evansville, pumping gas between classes to make ends meet. It was at the gas station where he met his future boss, who offered him a sales position at Sears. He quickly climbed the ladder, becoming a department manager, before quitting to start his own business: Evansville Candy Company.
Ever the entrepreneur, Evansville Candy Company was just the beginning. Leon was involved in several other business ventures, including Slush Puppie and real estate.
Never one to rest, Leon worked at Victoria golf course following his retirement and became heavily involved in his parish, Holy Rosary Catholic Church, where he was awarded the Msgr Bilskie and the Brute` Society Awards.
In his free time, he loved watching sports, especially college basketball and baseball, and working puzzles, and most of all designing and building birdhouses. He is remembered for his strong spirit, diligence, goofiness, and his unwavering support and love for his family. With his charming personality and gift for storytelling, he made friends everywhere he went; it was not uncommon for him to run into someone he knew whenever he left home.
Leon is greatly missed by his surviving family: Mike Weber of Ormond Beach, Florida; his daughter, Julie (Greg) Preske, of Fishers, Indiana; his beloved grandchildren, Emily Preske and Elizabeth (Matt) Waskiewicz; his brothers, Norman (Ruth) Weber and Carroll (Linda) Weber; and his sister, Roberta (John) White.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Beverly; his parents, Tom and Anna Weber; his brothers, Tom, Clarence, and Maurice; and his sister, Martha.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Leon’s memory to Holy Rosary Catholic Church at 1301 S. Green River Rd. Evansville, IN 47715, or to your charity of choice.
