Louis Wunderlich Obituary

Louis Milton Wunderlich, age 96, passed away on October 21, 2021, at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Evansville, IN.

Louis was born on November 11, 1924, in Evansville, IN, to Oscar Wunderlich and Berneda (Hudson) Wunderlich. He attended Howard Roosa Elementary School and graduated from Bosse High School. Louis, a World War II Veteran and Purple Heart recipient, served in the United States Army in the 79th Infantry operating a Half Track. Louis fought in France, arriving in the European Theater in June of 1944, and was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries received in battle from an exploding mortar shell. He was also awarded a European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal. Louis and his son, Stephen participated in the Honor Flight in October, 2015.

Louis retired from Alcoa Warrick in 1992 where he was employed as a Maintenance Mechanic for 29 years. After retiring, Louis especially enjoyed the Alcoa reunions and getting together with friends from his breakfast group. His skills as a “Mr. Fix It” were much appreciated by his family throughout the years.

Louis and his wife, Margaret loved hosting parties and holiday get-togethers for family and friends.  They also enjoyed traveling and created many wonderful memories for their family. Some of their favorite trips were vacations to Florida with their children and grandchildren. This past summer “Pop” and family enjoyed traveling in a RV to Florida and Tennessee.

Louis’ faith brought him great comfort in his later years. His good nature, warmth, and sense of fun will be dearly missed by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and “grand pets.”

Louis and Margaret had four children together: son, Stephen Wunderlich (Sarah); daughters, Cassandra Howard (John), Laura Turner (Bill), and Denise Blair (Dean); and they were also blessed with 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Louis was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret Rose (Claspell)Wunderlich, to whom he was happily married for 67 years; his parents, Oscar and Berneda Wunderlich; his sister, Evelyn Carey; and brothers, Frank Fuquay, Fritz Wunderlich, George Wunderlich, Jim Wunderlich, and Byron Joe Wunderlich.

Private Funeral Services will be held for the family at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue, Evansville. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery where full military rites will be rendered by the American Legion Kapperman Post 44.
