Lucy Morris Obituary

Lucy Helen Morris (Nevels), 89, cashed in her chips on Friday, March 16, 2018 at her home in Evansville, IN. She spent her last weeks surrounded by the ones who loved her most, staying fiery and full of sass until her dying day. She was best known as “Helen,” “Ma,” “Grammy,” and her favorite, “Pokey.” The last few years of her life she spent with her kids and granddaughter, devouring strawberry Rooties at IHOP, making it to Krispy Kreme in time for hot donuts, pruning her beloved tulips, collecting everything Gene Autry, and winning big at her favorite place, Tropicana. Helen had more luck than anyone, and she spent hours on the Double Diamond reels with the most beautiful smile making her deep blue eyes sparkle.

She was born January 26, 1929 to the late Ralph and Edna of Robards, KY. Her mother taught her to sew when she made potato sack dresses during the depression. Helen went on to be an incredible seamstress, creating ornate dresses for her granddaughter and friends. In 1946, she married her sweetheart, Dorris Morris. They made their home in Newburgh, IN and built a successful auto shop ran by Dorris who passed in August 1998.  She spent most of her working life at the Pantry in Newburgh, and later at the Salvation Army until the store closed and she settled into retirement with her furry companions, Gigi and Bailey.

She was preceded in death by her parents; adoring husband; and granddaughter, Samantha Hicks. Surviving her are her two children, Charles Morris and Linda (Morris) Hicks; her granddaughter and best friend, Cash Porter (wife, Barbara Sturgell); grandchildren, Pamela Midgett, Chris, Chase, and Caylee Fischer, Cory MacDonald and Kaylee Vaughn, Adrian, Eric and Josie Debes, and Alexander, Dylan, Lucas and Jack Hicks.

Devoting her life to the care of others, Helen touched the heart of every person that knew her. She sacrificed all she could to ease the lives of the ones she loved. Her big, beautiful heart succumbed to congestive heart failure. Therefore, the family requests that donations be made in Helen’s name to the American Heart Association.

A private Celebration of Helen’s Life will be held at a later date.
