M. Irene Green Obituary

M. Irene (Suitt) Green, age 96, of Evansville, IN, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, April 20, 2023, at home with her family by her side.

Irene was born August 29, 1926, in Francisco, IN, to Walter and Dora (Burnes) Suitt who preceded her in death. She attended grade schools in Francisco, Oakland City, and Tekoppel School in Evansville. After graduating from Central High School in 1944, she worked as a clerk in the office of Western Union. She later worked at Shane Uniform Company in the office, while her husband John served in the Army in Korea.

Irene loved music and dancing. In fact, at a dance is where she had her first date with her husband-to-be, John Green. Her friend set her up with a blind date, so they could go on a double date. When Irene opened the car door, John said, “I know you!” They had gone to eighth grade together at Tekoppel School. They continued dating and were married on July 14, 1949 at First Baptist Church. They had 73 wonderful years together. John and Irene both loved to travel and had many enjoyable years traveling the country, many times with family and friends. She was a devoted wife and mother of three daughters.

Her family was her life, and she loved having holiday celebrations at her home. She was still hosting some of the holiday celebrations up until she was 90 years old. She was a loyal friend, an immaculate housekeeper, excellent seamstress and cook. In the 1960s, during the years her girls attended Harwood Grade School, she worked in the clothing bank, was an involved member of the PTA, a brownie leader, and room mother.

Irene was a devoted Christian being a member of First Baptist Church since 1949. The family changed their membership to Forest Hills Baptist Church for several years before transferring back to First Baptist Church.

Irene is survived by her beloved husband, John A. Green; daughters, Jane Bennett (Jerry), Debbie Hayes (Jim), Donna Jobe; grandchildren, Gregory Culbertson (Billye), John Culbertson (Shanti), Adam Hayes, Nick Hayes, and Rich Jobe; and great grandchildren, Lindsee, Luke, Emily, Landon, Ryan, Liam, Lauren, and Lawson Culbertson; and great great grandson, Joshua John Culbertson.

Irene is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Dora Suitt; brother, Virgil Suitt; sister, Lillian Stisher Patton; and two sisters who passed away as babies.
