Marcella Jean (Horny) Stein

Marcella Jean (Horny) Stein, age 101, of Evansville, IN, left this world peacefully on Friday, August 12, 2022, in her home.

Marcella was born May 15, 1921, in the upstairs living quarters of the West Side Restaurant that her parents owned and operated for 45 years. She loved her God, her country, and was a Westsider through and through.

She attended Centennial Grade School, the future home of ISUE, F. J. Reitz High School, and Simpson Methodist Church. She was a member of Christian Fellowship Church since 1986, and taught school in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation for 32 years. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Evansville College and Indiana University, respectively.

Although she wanted to pursue a Nutrition and Dietician Degree at DuPauw University, she chose to stay in Evansville to help her widowed mother in the restaurant business. She was an avid genealogist, loved to travel, and enjoyed growing roses, winning many awards.

As a 32-year member of the Captain Henry Vanderburgh Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she was Chapter Regent for two years and voted as an Honorary Regent following her term. She served as the President of the Colonial Dames XVII Century, the Goodwill Auxiliary, the Welborn Hospital Auxiliary, the Eagle Auxiliary #427, and the Reitz Home Museum Guild. Marcella enjoyed participating in many organizations that supported the community.

Marcella is survived by her daughter, Kathy Barrett Mercer (Keith) of Evansville, IN; granddaughters, Leah Mercer (Kim Witherspoon) of Jacksonville, FL, and Kathryn Mercer Elliott (Scott) of Evansville, IN; and great grandchildren, Cash Elliott, Georgia Elliott, and Marlow Elliott.

Marcella is preceded in death by her parents; Richard and Gertrude (Henning) Horny; husband, Earl Stein; and grandson, Keith Mercer, Jr.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, August 19, 2022, at Boone Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue with Chaplain Tom Hubachek officiating. The Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames will begin the service with a walk-through. Private Entombment will be at Oak Hill Mausoleum.

Friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until service time, Friday, August 19, 2022, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel.
