Margie Nell (Siau) Taber-Sutton, age 100, of Evansville, passed away on Friday, November 25, 2022, at Willow Park. She was born on October 1, 1922, in the small oil field town of Sour Lake, Texas, to the late John Spencer Siau and Euphemia “Dot” Palmer Siau.
Margie graduated salutatorian of her high school class at Hull-Daisetta High School in Texas where she received many academic and civic awards. She was editor-in-chief of the high school newspaper. She played first-chair flute in the high school band. She was a graduate of Chenier’s Business College in Beaumont, Texas.
Margie was the first person hired by Lummus Construction Company, which built a synthetic rubber plant in Port Neches, Texas, for the United States Government during World War II. She handled all the office duties and helped in hiring personnel for building the plant. She moved to Evansville in 1943 and worked at the Sun Oil Company as secretary to the Personnel and Safety Director. Later, she was a buyer for the Goodman-Jester Department store in Shelbyville, Indiana.
Margie had been a member of the First Baptist Church in Evansville since 1950. She was a charter member of the Brentwood Garden Club, having served as president and chairman of various committees. She was awarded many ribbons for her flower arrangements in area flower shows.
Margie was a “Pink Lady” at Welborn Baptist Hospital during the 1960’s. She was an active member in Dexter Elementary and Harrison High School P.T.A.s where she served on all committees at one time or another. She was among the first volunteers for Habitat for Humanity in its formative years, signing up volunteers for the first home to be built in Evansville. There were so many carpenters, electricians, plumbers, painters, etc. lined up to volunteer their time that some had to be turned away and put on a “will call” list. Margie spoke of how painful it was to tell them that.
She also volunteered for the Heart Association and American Cancer Society fundraising drives in the 1960’s. She had been a member of the Opti-Mrs. Club. She enjoyed being a member of the Kennel Club. She was happily involved with “Soles for Souls,” having collected some 4,000 pairs of shoes for the needy.
Margie wrote both music and lyrics for songs which she gave each of her grandchildren on their first birthday. Each song was different in tunes and words and the cover contained a picture of the grandchild painted by her artist-nephew, Jon Siau. In 2014, Margie wrote a book as a Christmas gift for each of her grandchildren. The book contains the story of her life as well as 12 stories of different, interesting people and humorous experiences she encountered through the years.
Margie’s hobby was sending greeting cards to relations and friends on all occasions. She cherished time spent with her family and many friends. She also enjoyed decorating and working with flowers. She especially enjoyed having lunch with family and friends and she was happy when she was driving her car. Margie’s favorite color was yellow. As a young child, her favorite yo-yo was yellow and she always wanted her Shirley Temple doll dressed in yellow. She was often called “the Yellow Rose of Texas” by her family and friends.
Margie’s family is enormously grateful to the caregivers, staff, and residents of Willow Park who became valued friends and community in her final years.
Margie was preceded in death by her first husband, A.W. (Toby) Taber in 1971, the first Administrator of Welborn Clinic; and second husband, Walter H. Sutton, who passed away in 2017. She is also preceded by her parents; her sister, Winona, who died in infancy; brother, Palmer Siau and his wife, Lorene; sisters, Myrle Stauffer and her husband, Ted; Lois Carr and her husband, Hilton; and nephew, Dr. Wayne Stauffer.
