Mark McCoy Obituary

Evansville photographer Mark McCoy passed away at his home on September 25, 2021 of Hydro Nephrosis surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Mark, born June 9, 1955 and raised in Evansville, IN, was a 1973 graduate from Central High School, and a volunteer at the Vanderburgh County Human Society, and always loved helping out animals in need. He also loved football, but his biggest love and joy in life was music, and traveling with his wife and sons.

In 1974 he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Military Policeman with the Army Security Agency, stationed in Berlin, Germany. With history all around, this was where Mark initially got the photo bug and bought his first camera.

Upon discharge from the army, he worked for several years at Jeffrey Mining Machinery as a warehouseman and truck driver. In 1984 he started work at Deaconess Hospital, where he was in charge of shipping and receiving working in Materiel Management. While working on the dock, the best and brightest things began to happen for him. He turned his interest in photography into a second job, shooting primarily freelance gigs for Evansville Courier & Press, Evansville Living Magazine and News 4 U. He also shot senior pictures, and years of sports photos for a host of newspapers, magazines and private clients.

One of the best times of his life began shortly before 2010 when he had been working for News 4 U Magazine as Staff Writer and Photographer, where they gave him the freedom to cover local events, especially music. During this time, he met and became great friends with too many musicians to list but included:  Tommy Stillwell, Boscoe France, Carl Rodenberg, Jonas Cowan, Andrea Wirth, Joe Wagner and Zack Killebrew.  It was during this period that he and a group of local musicians and friends became known as “The Evansville Music Mafia”, a tag that Mark reveled in!

Mark was preceded in death by his Mother, Marianna (Markle) McCoy; Father, Elbert Russell McCoy and is survived by his beautiful and loving wife of 37 years, Mary Martha “Marty” (Rhodes) McCoy, R.N., and their two amazing sons Casey Jordan (Lindsey McCoy) and Dylan Patrick McCoy, and an awesome Brother-in-law, C. Larry Rhodes (Debbie), as well as, two personal best friends and “brothers of another mother”, Tim Williams and Gary Admire of Evansville. Mark always had strong beliefs in the value of really good and strong relationships. His many health problems the past few years kept him more or less isolated, but he wants all of his musical friends to know they were always on his mind and that he never stopped loving them. So, keep your friends and hold them tight, for nobody knows who will pass in the night. Support local music and “let your soulshine!”

The family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Hospice, especially his primary nurse, Ms.  Amy RN for the thoughtfulness and help during these past few months. You guys have been a blessing.

In the near future there will be a memorial concert in celebration of Mark’s life well lived.

Refer to Casey or Dylan McCoy’s facebook pages for details to come.

When the time comes Mark says: “Everybody break out your Guitars, your Djimbes, drum kits, harps, and anything else that produces music, and come on out and don’t forget to bring your dancin’ shoes!!!”
