Mary Dilger Obituary

Mary Ilene Dilger, age 101, of Newburgh, IN, passed away Saturday, November 1, 2025, at home in care of Deaconess Hospice.

Mary was born November 4, 1923, in Waverly, KY, to Thaddeus Auburn and Mary Ella (Spencer) Puryear. She graduated from Morganfield High School on May 15, 1941 and attended David Lipscomb Church of Christ School in Nashville, TN. On April 21, 1947, she married her first husband, Gilbert Leroy McCutchan. She married her second husband, Warren Bernard Dilger on July 16, 1971 at the Deaconess Hospital Chapel. Mary worked as an office assistant at Greyhound Bus Corporation for 5 years and as a bookkeeper at Deaconess Hospital for 17 years. She later worked as a sales associate at L.S. Ayres and Stewarts for 14 years. She was a member of Washington Avenue Church of Christ. She enjoyed going on after school bus trips with her husband, Warren, while he drove the bus. Mary loved travelling and going on church excursions. She travelled to Hilton Head Harbour Town Lighthouse and climbed the 114 steps to the top when she was 87 years old. She also enjoyed walking her neighborhood and the Scenic French Island Trail. 

Mary is survived by her son, David L. McCutchan (Mary); grandchildren, Mark McCutchan, Brett McCutchan (Leslie), Adam McCutchan and Kyle McCutchan (Andrea); 16 great-grandchildren; granddaughter-in-laws, Jennifer McCutchan and Wendy McCutchan; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Gilbert Leroy McCutchan; second husband, Warren Bernard Dilger; son, Harold Robert “Bob” McCutchan; grandsons, David “HEATH” McCutchan and Christopher Aaron McCutchan; and sisters, Christine Cottingham (Mahlon) and Lockie Watson (A.O. Watson).

Friends may visit from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. (Noon), Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel, 5330 Washington Avenue. Memorial and Funeral Services will begin at 12:00 p.m. (Noon), Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, with Alan Bush officiating.

Entombment will follow at Park Lawn Mausoleum, 1526 S Green River Rd. Evansville, IN 47715.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to: Riley Children’s Hospital on behalf of Mary’s great granddaughter or to Washington Avenue Church of Christ at 4001 Washington Ave. Evansville, IN 47714.
