Mekhi Anthony Maxwell, known by all as “Butter”, age 22, gained his wings on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
Butter was born January 7, 2003, in Newburgh, IN, to Mark Maxwell and Michele (Small) Smith. He attended the Academy for Innovative Studies and was a past member of Memorial Baptist Church. He enjoyed basketball, football, music, and video games. What Butter treasured the most was spending time with his family and friends. He loved being a Dad! Butter loved his kids more than anything! They were his world, and he was their super hero.
Anyone who knew Butter knew he had no filter and never bit his tongue about anything. He either liked you, or he didn’t. He kept it 100, always! Butter was as “real” as they come. Complete transparency. He was the “same” no matter where he was or who he was with. Butter was “Butter” 24/7.
Anyone who knew Butter knew if he loved them, he loved hard! When talking with anyone he loved (family and friends) he never hung up or left without saying “I love you.” He said life is short, and you never know if that’s the last time you will see them.
He is survived by his mother, Michele Smith; father, Mark Maxwell; significant other and love of his life (since they were 13), the mother of his children, Arieion Barnett; their beloved children, Zyra Maxwell and Za’Kai Maxwell; siblings, Deonté Harvey (Tawny), Darien Maxwell, DeArius Fleming-Smith, Dana Smith, Octavia Smith, Justice Smith, DeShay Maxwell, Markel Maxwell, and Mark Maxwell; his nephew, Kingston Harvey (which he had a very special bond); a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends; and his best friend since they were 5, “Brother from another mother”, DeNero Bowling.
Butter is preceded in death by his grandmother, Janet (Kuhlenschmidt) Hughart; and grandfather, Randy L. Small.
