Melba "Jane" Swain Obituary

Melba “Jane” (Scobey) Swain, age 79, of Newburgh, IN, passed away Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Heart to Heart Hospice House.

Jane was born April 4, 1946, in Campbell, MO, to N.O. and Modell (Tullos) Scobey. She graduated from Poplar Bluff High School in 1964 and from Oakland City University in 1968 with a Bachelor’s Degree in music education. Jane taught primary and secondary education music class, as well as private piano lessons.

Jane was a devoted and disciplined Christian, having spent her life in the ministry alongside her husband, John. She served in the roles of administrative assistant, pianist, organist, and choir leader for the many churches her husband ministered at. She also served on the board of directors at Camp Brosend for several years and on the General Baptist Women’s Mission Board.

Jane is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Pastor John D. Swain; daughter, Michelle Swain (Joel); brothers, Travis Scobey (Linda) and Joe Scobey (Rosie); grandchildren, Adonnya Swain (Michael), Isaiah LeDoux, Sammy LeDoux, Night Balasingham, and True Balasingham; and great granddaughter, Elora Velazquez-Swain. 

Jane is preceded in death by her parents; and daughter, Camilla Diane Swain.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 16, 2026, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue with Pastors Tommy Epperson, Ron Austin, and Ron Hampton officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Gilead Cemetery.

Friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Sunday, February 15, 2026, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel.
