Mildred Utley Bruner Obituary

Mildred Utley Bruner, lovingly known as Millie and Granny B, age 102, of Evansville, IN, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Heart to Heart Hospice Inpatient Center.

Mildred was born April 7, 1921, in Evansville, IN, to William J. and Anna L. (Abbott) Utley. She graduated from Central High School in 1939 and graduated as an RN from Deaconess School of Nursing in 1942. Mildred was a Veteran in the United States Army Nurse’s Corp, serving as Second Lieutenant during World War II. Mildred was able to be part of the 2nd Honor Flight out of Evansville.

Mildred was a past member of Central United Methodist Church and most recently attended Salem Church of Heusler. Mildred worked in Nursing for Deaconess Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital for 11 years and later in Missions in Rio Grande Valley, TX, building churches for the Spanish speaking Methodist congregation for 6 years. Since she started losing her sight in her thirties, she began attending classes at the Blinded Vets of Indiana, Blinded Vets of America, and the Evansville Association of the Blind. Mildred enjoyed listening to audio books, traveling, and camping. She was very generous and was an inspiration for so many with her ability to live alone, despite being blind for most of her life. Mildred especially loved spending time with family and grandchildren. She always said the best thing she ever did was raise 2 wonderful boys. She was loved by so many and will be dearly missed.

Mildred is survived by her sons, Phil Bruner (LeeAnne) and Sam Bruner (Diana); grandchildren, Kristin Bruner Cobb (Jeff), Lee Bruner (Hillary), Jason Bruner; step granddaughter, Sherri Moran (Ryan); great grandchildren, Jonah Cobb (Rachel), Jacob Cobb (Isabelle), and Rowan Bruner; step great grandchildren, Blake Moran (Hannah), Grace Moran, Chelsea Moran, and Allison Moran; and great great grandsons, Noah Cobb and Maverick Cobb.

Mildred is preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband of 42 years, Paul G. Bruner, who passed away in 1987; sisters, Etta Kahn Wright, Virginia Dagley, and Jeanette Korff; and grandson, Steven Bruner.
