Mildred "Lavell" Cartwright Obituary

Mildred “Lavell” (Beliles) Cartwright, age 91, of Newburgh, IN, passed away peacefully Friday, November 8, 2024, at her home. Lavell was a wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend. She embodied love itself, teaching us all how to live it, give it, and hold it close.

Lavell was born March 7, 1933, in Muhlenberg County, KY, to the late Moncie and Nellie (Hardison) Beliles.

More than 70 years ago, Lavell, affectionately known as Mimi, met Jack and eventually became the partner and wife of a man with whom she would build a life full of profound meaning. At the heart of everything they created was family, a bond that defined and sustained them. Lavell was a woman of remarkable strength and grace—resilient yet gentle, clever yet compassionate. Her warmth and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her home was a sanctuary, a place where all who entered felt cherished and welcomed. Lavell made everyone around her feel seen and valued. She absolutely adored her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and was their biggest fan, showing up to every sporting event and extracurricular activity with unwavering support and readiness to yell at the referees, if needed. She gave the most sound, heartfelt advice and was always an open and safe space for others. She was everyone’s Mimi.

Her keen intuition and sharp mind were coupled with a deep faith in Jesus, from which she drew comfort and strength. Lavell was an active member of New Life Church, serving faithfully in the Missionary Society. In her quieter moments, she enjoyed crocheting and quilting, creating beautiful works of art with her hands—each stitch reflecting her thoughtful, caring nature. She enjoyed weekends away visiting her sisters and family, sharing laughs and reminiscing.

Her legacy is one of enduring love that shaped and transformed the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know her. To be part of her world was to witness the true power of love, not just as an emotion, but as a transformative force.

Lavell is survived by her son, Larry Cartwright (Shelia); grandchildren, Jamon Cartwright (Rachel), Ashley Upton (Lee) Brittnie Cartwright and Logan Cartwright, great grandchildren, Alivia Schwambach, Jaxon Cartwright, Katherine Cartwright, Easton Hunt, Caidence Upton, Teagan Upton, Sophie Cartwright, and Pasleigh Cooper; and sisters, Lavena Cottrell and Fredia Carter (Mike).

Lavell is preceded in death by her parents, Moncie and Nellie Beliles; beloved husband of 60 years, Jack Cartwright; son, Gary Cartwright; brother, Gerald Beliles; and step-grandson, Troy Dorris.
