Nathan Payne Obituary

Nathan Alan Payne, 42, of Evansville, Indiana, was taken from us suddenly on May 13, 2026, following an automobile accident.

Born in Evansville on September 9, 1983, Nathan spent parts of his younger years in Kentucky and Michigan before settling back in the city he called home — and he made Evansville a livelier, funnier, and more loved-in place for having been here.

Nathan was organized chaos in the best possible way. He was never one to leave well enough alone — always cooking up a new idea, rearranging something, taking on a fresh project, or finding a better way to do what most of us would have left as it was. He couldn't sit still for long, and he didn't want to.

Professionally a jack of all trades, Nathan made his living with a paintbrush and excelled as a house painter, but his skills ran far beyond that. He was a true DIY man who could fix, build, or rework just about anything, and he was always willing to take on an odd job for a friend or family member. If you needed a hand and Nathan had the tool or the know-how, he'd be at your door — though he would want to know what was for dinner.

Anyone who knew Nathan knew he was a lifelong Ghostbusters fan. What began as a childhood obsession quietly became part of who he was — surfacing in jokes and references too often to be coincidence, and most recently in the replica of the Vigo painting from Ghostbusters II that hung proudly on his wall. He knew it was part of his persona, and he wore it well.

He loved a good joke, and he had a gift for keeping a straight face long enough to make you genuinely uncomfortable before breaking character with a laugh. He was frugal in a way he was proud of — using things long past their practical lifespan, with something always on the brink of falling apart wherever he went. It was part of his charm.

But what people loved most about Nathan was the quiet steadiness beneath all the chaos and humor. He would listen to anyone's problems with sincere love and without a hint of judgment, but he gave honest feedback when you asked for it. And if he could help — with a tool, a skill, a ride, or just his time — he was there.

Nathan would rarely be seen without his beloved dog, Rooter, whom he and his mother adopted and raised together. Rooter was his buddy, his shadow, and his constant companion.

Nathan was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Lovan; his grandmother ("Nana"), Anna Mae Huett; and his nephew, Caleb Berfanger.

He is survived by his significant other, Robert W. Fickas; his father, Dale Payne; his siblings, Anthony Payne (Amy), Daniel Payne (Kimberly), Roger Payne (Kristel), Brian Bartholome (Sherry), Stephanie Biggs (Larry), Natalie Corum (Mike), Amy Nosko (David, Jr.), Michael Joe Bartholome (Jessie), and Larry Payne; his aunt, Linda Hershey; and his faithful companion, Rooter. He also leaves behind a wide circle of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who loved him dearly.
