Norman Phineas Schmitt, age 93, of Evansville, IN, passed away at 1:20 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2020, peacefully in his home.
Norman was born November 23, 1926, in Dale, IN, to Louis Edward and Elsie Delora (Wetzel) Schmitt. He attended Dale Elementary and Dale High School. Norman played in the school band and entered the Naval Service on February 7, 1945, and was sent to Great Lakes, IL. He attended Naval Electrical Training School in Gulfport, MS, and served on the USS Washington, USS Reno, and USS Essex.
Norman was discharged on July 19, 1946, as a Fireman First Class. He attended electrical school in Kansas City, MO., Mechanic Arts School in Evansville, and in 1948, he became an I.B.E.W. Local #16 member as a Journeyman Electrician. Norman’s places of employment included Evansville, Louisville, Ohio, Florida, New York City, and New Jersey.
Norman was a member of the Santa Claus United Methodist Church, Woodbridge United Methodist Church, and for the last 50 years, Central United Methodist Church. He was an active member as Chairman of Church Council and helpful in many ways. His dedication to volunteering at youth camps and weekly work days spanned many years at Santa Claus United Methodist Campground.
Norman is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jane (Wibbeler) Schmitt; son, Stanley Schmitt; daughter, Brenda Lowey (Tom); brother, Dawson Schmitt; grandson, Timothy Alan Lowey; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Norman is preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Pauline Gale (Lett) Schmitt; brother, Durbin Schmitt; and sisters-in-law, Barbara Schmitt and Wilhelmina Schmitt.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 13, 2020, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue with Pastor Dewey Miller, Reverend Dr. Donald Griffith, and Pastor Craig Duke officiating. Burial will be in United Methodist Cemetery in Santa Claus, IN.
Friends may visit from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 13, 2020, at BOONE FUNERAL HOME EAST CHAPEL.
