Owen C. Carver, age 78, of Evansville, IN, passed away at 5:21 a.m. on December 15, 2020, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital with his family nearby.
Owen was born January 22, 1942, in Evansville, IN, to Jake Carver and Bertha (Hunt) Carver. He graduated from Central High School in 1960. He served as a mechanic in the U.S. Air Force and worked in manufacturing before retiring after a 25-year career with the Mt. Vernon Street Department. Owen was devoted to his family, active in the Mt. Vernon community where he served as a poll worker during every election and built sets for multiple high school theater productions. He drove the church bus many years at Harvestime Temple and after moving to Indianapolis in 2008 was active in the resident council of his senior community. Upon moving back to Evansville in 2016, Owen enjoyed regular breakfasts with his former Baker Elementary schoolmates.
Owen loved a good and awkward joke, often told wildly meandering tales, regularly played pranks on his girls, tackled any “honey do” list he was given, and was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren whom he raised to be strong, loving, and kind, and to cherish the value and equality of others. He was indulgent to the point of spoiling his grandchildren. None of his children or grandchildren can recall a time when he turned down their request for his help, time or attention. He shared his love of math and problem-solving with his girls and believed each of them was capable of great things. Owen was a doting husband who wanted nothing more than to care and provide for, and keep safe his great love, Janet, whom he met when he was in 3rd grade and spent the rest of his life loving well.
Owen is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janet (Morris) and his daughters, Becky Carver, Suzy Carver Bigley (Pat), Krista Carver, and Julia Kathary (Greg); grandchildren, Julietta Garrett (Ukiah), Sean Bigley, and Braden Kathary; a great grandchild, Keagon Moore; sisters, Artie Dardeen, Roxanne Beaudry (Phillip), and Viola Carver; brothers, James Carver, Jack Carver (Judy), and Calvin Carver (Janet); many bonus children and grandchildren, notably Michaela Springer, Tiffany Turner, and Andre Pochon; and his beloved chihuahua, Bella.
Owen is preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws Ray and Maryetta Morris.
A Celebration of Life small in-person gathering will be held in January. Privately, a military burial marker will be placed at Oak Hill Cemetery. According to his and Janet’s wishes, Owen will be cremated and returned to the earth at their chosen special place.
