Patricia "Patty" Skerl Obituary

Patricia L. “Patty” (Magazine) Skerl, age 74, of Boonville, Indiana, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2026, at Deaconess Midtown Hospital.

Patty was born November 23, 1951, in Evansville, Indiana, to Gilbert and Sara (Toyen) Magazine. She graduated from William Henry Harrison High School in 1969. After graduating, Patty was lucky enough to spend some time in Israel. While she was there, she worked at a chicken house, and let’s just say it was a long time before she was open to eating chicken again. After returning, she attended Indiana State University of Evansville for a time, before transferring to University of Evansville to take banking courses. With the help of some trusted, mutual friends, she met the man who was to be her husband, Bernie. They married in 1982 and had their daughter, Rachel, in 1983. Patty worked for her father’s business, GEM Chemical before stepping into a banking roll, and worked for several banks in town over the years.  Outside of work, these two kept busy with parenting life. During high school, Rachel was in the marching band, and I guess one could say, so were Bernie and Patty. They were true band parents. She was along for every single event, competition and game where Rachel performed, while Bernie worked with the pit crew helping with equipment. Patty and her family were also the sponsors for a Wish Kid, and was able to assist in granting their wish of going to Disney World. The pair were always getting up to something. They had some good friends over in Henderson, Maggie and Jose, that they played cards with regularly. You could also find them working the Wish Upon A Star booth at the Fall Festival every year, which was one of Patty’s favorite things to do. They traveled to Mexico and Jamacia as well. Patty also ran around with her best friend, Julie Leavitt. The girls enjoyed searching for Anna Lee dolls at various stores. Patty loved her pink flamingos, and looked for flamingo items on her shopping adventures. After her mom passed, she adopted her mom’s love of hot air balloons and began collecting things like that as well. Eventually, Patty met her whole purpose in life, Izzy, her beautiful grandbaby. And to Izzy, Patty was BeBe. Talk about love at first sight. Patty and Izzy have been inseparable. Patty took her to Disney on Ice every year and always bought her a new princess dress for the occasion. She’s been there for her every step of the way. Patty has been a loving mom, BeBe, sister, aunt, and friend. Patty will be missed for many things, especially her joy, fun spirit, and the way she loved her family.

Patty is survived by her daughter, Rachel (Patrick) Heineman; granddaughter, Izabella “Izzy”; her siblings, Cheryl (Phil Moeller) Magazine, Susan Magazine, and Brian (Mary) Magazine; her nieces and nephews, Jonathan, Daniel, Meghann, Lindsey and Andrew; and her wonderful cousin who’s more like a sister, Alice Mabrey.

Patty is preceded in death by her parents; her spouse, Bernie Skerl; and her best friend, Julie Leavitt.

Services for Patty will be held privately.
