Patrick Larry “Pat” O’Brien, age 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at his home. Patrick endured cancer for 9 years and is now in a new body with our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Patrick was born on July 12, 1943, in Terre Haute, IN, to Jack O’Brien and Irene (Hawkins) Wyand. After his father passed, Patrick was raised by his loving dad, Paul Wyand. He graduated from Bosse High School in 1961, and he attended Evansville College. He was a proud Veteran of the US Navy during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged on August 22, 1968. Patrick and Barbara Pfingston were married on July 13, 1968, at Heritage Baptist Church in Evansville, and spent 57 wonderful years together. They shared a deep love of raising their children and being present in their growing family’s lives. Patrick loved his family, and being a Papa was his greatest joy and blessing. Patrick worked as a traveling sales representative for multiple companies and started his own photography studio. After moving from Evansville to Mt. Vernon, he and Barbara joined Calvary Baptist Church and opened their own Allstate Insurance Office, and he served as the Vice President of Kiwanis. Patrick always encouraged others to never be afraid of changing careers and to pursue things that brought joy. The highlight of his week was spending Monday nights eating pizza with his friends at Turoni’s on Weinbach.
Patrick later joined First Christian Church of Mt. Vernon, pastored by the late Tom Buffington, where he faithfully served as an elder and taught in children’s church for many years under Pastor Rick Sellers. He attributed his growth in the Word of God from teaching children’s church and attending Bible Study Fellowship on Tuesday evenings. Patrick visited nursing homes throughout his community to perform puppet and magic shows and to tell the residents about Jesus.
Patrick loved his country and was honored to be part of the Honor Flight of Southern Indiana EVV16 on April 16, 2024. His grandson, Daniel Junker, was proud to be able to accompany him.
Patrick is survived by his loving family, including his wife, Barbara O’Brien; daughters, Shana Juncker (James) and Lisa Smith (Brandon); grandchildren, Alyssa Dahl (Austin), Emily Juncker (fiancé Gabe Teruel), Daniel Juncker (fiancée Hadley Osterman), Faith Juncker, Nicholas Reiter (Angel), and Rhiannon Reiter; great-grandchildren, Damian and Drake Reiter, and Shepherd and Theodor Dahl; many nieces and nephews; and many loving extended family who will all carry his memory in their hearts.
Patrick is preceded in death by his father, Jack O’Brien, who passed away when Patrick was very young; his mother and father figure, Irene and Paul Wyand; brother, Tom O’Brien; and his great-grandchild, Shiloh Dahl.
The family would like to thank the Black Township Fire Department and Posey County EMS for their service and aid during Patrick’s final moments.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 14, 2025, at Calvary Baptist Church, 618 Main Street, Mt. Vernon, IN, with Pastor Rick Sellers, Pastor Kevin Petty, and Austin Dahl officiating. The American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard of Mt. Vernon will render military rites. Friends and Family are welcome to a Sunday meal following the service at First Christian Church of Mt. Vernon in honor of Patrick—as he provided a Sunday meal each week after church for his friends.
