Philip Howard Siegel, 90, of Evansville, IN, passed away at 4:15 a.m., on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at The Village at Hamilton Pointe.
Phil was born on August 21, 1934, in Evansville, IN, to the late Manuel and Lillian (Kreisman) Siegel. He attended Washington Elementary School and graduated from Bosse High School in 1952. He married Doris R. (Kahn) Siegel in 1956, and together they have 4 children and 8 grandchildren. Their 3 daughters graduated from Indiana University, and their son graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Phil graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN, in 1956, and was a veteran in the U.S. Army as a Captain Armor. He went on to receive his Juris Doctor Law Degree from Indiana University in 1960. His first job was with Warren, Merral & Combs; thereafter Combs & Siegel. In 1980, he became a sole practitioner and also shared offices with W. Jack Schroeder where he primarily practiced real estate law and probate law. For many years, Phil’s office was located across the hall from the law firm of Kahn, Dees, Donovan and Kahn. The many professional courtesies and kindnesses they showed to Phil helped form a relationship that he truly valued.
He was a Member of the Evansville Bar Association, Indiana State Bar and American Bar Associations; Secretary of the Indiana Bar Association; Fellow Indiana Bar Foundation; Member of the Board of Directors of Indiana Law School (Bloomington) and Class Agent. Phil truly loved Indiana University. Phil was also the President of Evansville Bar Association in 1978 as well as holding other offices. He was the Assistant City Attorney of Evansville, IN; the first attorney for Area Plan Commission of Evansville and Vanderburgh County; the President for Burdette Park Board; and the President of the Board of Public Safety for 14 years. Phil was an adjunct professor at the University of Evansville teaching Real Estate Law, a program that started in 1978, and continued every other year for 39 years.
Highlights to mention: Giving a sermon at The Red Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church; being a Member and Officer of the Board of Epi-hab; being on the Board of Regina Home; being the Vice President of the Board of Evansville Jaycees; being a Life Member of IU Alumni Association and Varsity Club; receiving the Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1995 for the IU Alumni Club of Greater Evansville; the President of Adath Israel Temple; being the President of Temple Adath B’nai Israel; President of Evansville Jewish Community Council; receiving a degree to become a Synagogue Associate from Hebrew Union College, Jewish Institute of Religion, in Cincinnati, OH; winning Attorney General’s Cup for March Against Hunger Food Drive for a sole Practitioner in the State of Indiana given by Attorney General Greg Zoeller; being Chairman of the Judicial Evaluation Committee; being on the Board of Directors of the Washington Court Redevelopment Corporation; being on the Public Works Board; being on the Treasurer/Bar Association; being on the Board of Epi-Hab, on the Board of the Lay Advisory Board of Regina Pacis Home; being the Chairman for Operation Little Red Wagon, a Jaycee Project in 1956; the President of Burdette Park Board; being Chairman of the B’nai B’rith Teddy Bear Project which gives Teddy Bears to the homeless and to children in the hospital; being awarded the Susan K. Helfrich for Excellence in Pro Bono Services; being President of Plaza Park Booster Club; was admitted to the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation Hall of Fame in 2014 and received the James Bethel Gresham Freedom Award from the Evansville Bar Association in 2017.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Doris R. (Kahn) Siegel; daughters, Adena Lynn Siegel of Evansville, IN, Kathy Baird (Dr. Dean Baird) of Potomac, MD and Marcy Muchnik (Paul) of Toronto, Canada; son, Michael Lane Siegel (Laura) of Vancouver, WA; and grandchildren, Dr. Michael David Baird, Robyn Baird, Lindsay Muchnik, Jacob Muchnik, Evan Siegel, Lily Siegel, Avery Siegel, and Philip Kian Siegel.
Phil is also preceded in death by his brother, Milton Alan Siegel.
Friends may visit from 10:00 a.m. until time of service, Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at Temple Adath B'nai Israel, 8440 Newburgh Road, Evansville, IN 47715.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at Temple Adath B'nai Israel with Rabbi Gary Mazo officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
