Philip Edward Thomas

Philip Edward Thomas, age 78, of Alford, Florida passed away at 6:40 pm on Thursday, September 10, 2020. Phil was born in Waverly, Kentucky to the late John A. and Virginia L. (Crowdus) Thomas.

Phil has resided in Alford Florida since 2001, moving there from Sullivan, Indiana. Phil was an active member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Marianna Florida and a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. Phil served in the U.S. Navy as a Radioman and was a proud member of the Amvets Post 231 of Fountain, FL. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed gardening, playing golf, fishing, working in his yard and taking daily morning walks with his dogs. Phil enjoyed woodworking, he made birdhouses and treasured gifts for family with his scroll saw.

Phil retired from AMAX Coal Company in 1997 and took great pleasure in his post-retirement career working with students and staff while employed by the Jackson County School Board.

Phil had an engaging personality and a great sense of humor making everyone around him laugh and smile. Everyone knew when Phil was near, by his singing and whistling, his love of life was ever-present.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, sister Ann Thomas Cordell and two infant sons John Paul Thomas and Andrew Philip Thomas.

Phil is survived by his wife of 37 years Cheryl Thomas of Alford, Florida, daughter Martha “Mardi” Thomas-File, husband Jeff File and grandsons Jon-Paul and Tayler File all of Evansville, son F.S. Thomas and wife of Georgia and grandsons Connor and Payton Thomas, brothers John Thomas of Conroe, TX, Paul Thomas and wife Mary "Maggie" of Alford, FL as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service for Phil will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Evansville, Indiana on Saturday, September 19th at 11:00 am. A Celebration of Life Event will be held in Florida at a later date.
