Robert Futrell Obituary

Robert Dawson Futrell, age 90, of Evansville, IN, passed away Monday, March 23, 2020, at Linda E. White Hospice House.

Robert was born December 18, 1929, in Dover, TN, to Edgar Dawson and Lillie Mae (Anglin) Futrell. He graduated from Sedalia High School in Mayfield, KY and was a Veteran of the United States Army. Robert received his draft notice the day he and Helen got their marriage license. They married June 30, 1951, and he left for Fort Knox five days later. After being stateside, he served in Korea for 14 months. When he was discharged, Helen drove cross-country to meet him at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, CO. Robert was a longtime member of Washington Avenue Baptist Church and founding member of Creekside Baptist Church.

Robert retired from Indiana Bell AT&T in 1989 after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Reed Masonic Lodge and a Shriner where he worked with the Hadi Shrine Circus, setting up wiring on Saturday mornings for the hearing impaired. Robert worked with Constructors for Christ for over 15 years and was able to join them on many mission trips in the United States. He also had the opportunity to go on mission trips twice to Brazil and to the Holy Land where he helped build a school in the Gaza Strip.

Robert’s passion was fishing. There was never a fish he couldn’t catch. He had a place on Lake Barkley for 37 years where he would spend his free time. Robert loved people – he never met a stranger. As the oldest grandchild, Robert was a patriarch of the Futrell family for the last few years. He loved spending time with his grandkids and great grandkids.

Robert is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Helen Marie (Deitz) Futrell; daughters, Vicki McMaster (Barry) of Indianapolis, IN, Terry Martin (Kenneth) of Evansville, IN, and Carolyn Miller of Evansville, IN; son, James Robert Futrell (Melanie) of Evansville, IN; sisters, Ella Ernestine Davies of Fayetteville, NC, Betty Lois Dickson of Moline, IL, and Patricia Cook of Paris, TN; brother, Bill Hogland of Elk Grove, IL; 7 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister, 4 brothers, and 3 great grandchildren.
