Robert "Bob" Alexander Obituary

Robert “Bob” Smith Alexander, age 76, of Palm Springs, CA, formerly of Evansville, IN, passed away on September 29, 2020.

Bob was born December 23, 1943, in Wytheville, VA, to Fred Wilson and Virginia Smith.  At a young age, he volunteered for the United States Army in the 101st Airborne out of Fort Campbell, KY, where he made forty-seven successful jumps as a paratrooper. Once he was out of the military, Bob took a chance and moved to Hollywood, CA, to pursue a singing career. Later he moved to Nashville, TN, and that’s where he found his passion for being a concert promoter. Some of the concerts included Roy Orbison, Ike and Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, The Doors, Fleetwood Mac, The Doobie Brothers, The Eagles, and many many more. In 1988, he moved back to California where he produced several shows in Palm Springs, CA. He was the Former President of Palm Springs Walk of Stars (180 stars have been inducted), the President of the Las Vegas Walk of Stars, and the President of the Motion Picture Hall of Fame, which he was currently working on for the past 10 years.

Bob put on music festivals and many other acts at Bosse Field in Evansville, IN, in 1971, Bull Island in White County, IL, near Griffin, IN, in 1972, Electric Cowboy Festival in Columbia, TN, in 1983, and Fan Fest in Pomona, CA, in 1994. Bull Island became the news story of the year; it was on 1000 acres of land with over 300,000 people attending that concert.

Bob had many fond memories of growing up with Buddy Catron, Mary Helen Varney, and their families.

Bob was survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Janet (Weideman) Alexander; children, Tracy Wingerter (Jerry) of Evansville, IN, Dion Smith (Dawn) of Orlando, FL; Janet’s children, Daryn Schloss (David) of Temecula, CA, Elizabeth Reese of Wildomar, CA, and Stephen Weideman of Havasu, AZ; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; brother, Joseph “Shorty” Smith; sister, Jean Gravely (R.P.); fourteen nieces and nephews; and fur baby, Gracie.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert “Bobby” Smith, Jr; grandson, Austin Smith; second mother, Margaret Smithers; and siblings, Mary Elizabeth Allison, George Smith, and Edna Louise Seagle.

Due to COVID-19 there will not be any public funeral services. Burial will be private at Park Lawn Cemetery in Evansville, IN, at a later date.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter at 4575 East Mesquite Avenue, Palm Springs, CA 92264 or Disabled American Veterans at 1809 Grimes Avenue, Owensboro, KY 42303.
