Ronald G. Shanks, age 79, of Evansville, IN, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at St. Vincent Hospital.
Ron was born February 3, 1944, in Evansville, IN, to Herbert R. Shanks and Elton M. (Cummings) Melton. He attended Bosse High School and graduated from Boone County High School in Florence, KY. Ron was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving in the 10th Special Forces Group – Airbourne Division in Cambodia and Germany during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Bricklayer’s Local #4. He served as the President of the Parent Teacher Fellowship for Mill Road Christian School and was a Founding Board Member of Faith Heritage Christian School. He coached soccer for the Pepsi Youth Leagues, Mill Road Christian School, and Faith Heritage Christian School. He was an active member of Heritage Baptist Church for over 50 years where he served for a time as the Youth Pastor. Ron worked for Rheinschmidt’s Flooring and Wink Tile Company for several years before retiring in 2010. He was a Shutterbug who loved taking pictures. Ron enjoyed riding his Goldwing motorcycle, and he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Ron is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Anas L. (Toone) Shanks; daughters, Le Ann Shanks-Hasker (David), Teresa Shanks (David Thuerbach); sister, Angela Grable; brothers, Steve Shanks, Larry Shanks (Lynn), and Garry Shanks (Deanna); sister-in-law, Susan Melton, grandchildren, Michael Thuerbach, Samuel Thuerbach (Kacey), Katie Thuerbach Felty (Matthew), Ethan Hasker, Evan Hasker, Emma Hasker, and Emmitt Thuerbach; great grandchildren, Braxton Felty and Zoey Thuerbach; and several nieces and nephews.
Ron is preceded in death by his parents, Merle and Elton Melton and Herbert and Wanda Shanks; and brothers, Robert Melton and Richard Melton.
Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Friday, June 2, 2023, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue with Pastor Eddie Russ officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery where the American Legion Kapperman Post 44 will render full military rites.
Friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 1, 2023, and from 11:00 a.m. until service time, Friday, June 2, 2023, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel.
