Obituary

Sarah Maryssa Matthews, age 46, of Marion, IN, passed away at 10:24 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at home after a 16-year battle with brain cancer.

Sarah was born October 2, 1975, in Marion, IN, to Steven and Barbara (Coffing) Matthews. She graduated from Harrison High School in 1994 and went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Taylor University in 1998 as well as her Master’s Degree in School Counseling from Ball State University. Sarah absolutely loved being a teacher, and her students were like her kids. She taught High School AP Chemistry for 22 years and was a basketball, track, and cross-country coach. She enjoyed running half marathons, was an avid Duke and Purdue fan, and loved watching March Madness.

Sarah is survived by her loving parents, Steven and Barbara Matthews; brothers, Steven Matthews II (Kristina) and Eric Matthews (Jennifer); nephews who just adored her, Zachary, Joshua, Jack, and Elias Matthews; step nephew, Ethan; aunts and uncles, Larry and Jenny Grandstaff, George Coffing, Dave and Brenda Matthews, Gerald Matthews II, Rollie and Tracee Matthews, and Russell Matthews; and many cousins and special friends.

Sarah is preceded in death by her grandparents, Charles and Mary Coffing and Gerald and Rosemary Matthews; and uncle, Daniel Coffing.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. CST, Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at Crossroads Christian Church, 10800 Lincoln Avenue, Newburgh, IN, with Pastor Todd Bussey, Pastor Phil Heller, and Pastor Matthew Trexler officiating. A Live Stream will be available beginning twenty minutes prior to the service time. Friends may visit from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. CST, Monday, April 11, 2022, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue, Evansville, IN, and from 10:00 a.m. until service time, Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at Crossroads Christian Church.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3:30 p.m. EST, Sunday, May 1, 2022, at The River Church, 759 South Lenfesty Avenue, Marion, IN.
