Shirley E. (Yeager) Murphy

Shirley Eleanor (Yeager) Murphy, age 90, of Evansville, IN, passed away at 6:15 a.m. on Saturday, February 6, 2021, at Terrace of Solarbron. She was well cared for and shown so much love by the nursing staff there as Covid required that the roles that family would have filled, were filled by them. We are incredibly grateful for each of those individuals who helped with window visits, held up the phone for FaceTime, and shared her last moments beside her, holding her hand so she need not be afraid.  Thank you!

Shirley was born August 23, 1930, in Pennsylvania, to Francis Yeager and Anna (Strain) Yeager. A member of the “Greatest Generation,” her life was defined by those characteristics that earned her generation its name—hard work, devotion to family, and tenacity. Nothing in Shirley’s life was easy. She knew the meaning of heartache and pain. She also knew what it meant to keep going. When she moved to Evansville in 1984 to be close to her daughter and grandchildren, their world became hers. Her weekends were spent with her grandchildren, creating precious memories distinct to each of them—long walks, feeding the ducks by the pond, special meals made together, playing cards, learning and loving her favorite Glenn Miller music while jitterbugging on the kitchen linoleum. These intentional moments built relationships and gave us the gifts of memories too dear to forget.  She worked until she was 86 years old, retiring in 2016 from Schultheis Insurance.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Barbara Butterfield (James); grandchildren, Courtney Hahn (Jeff), Amy Giorgio (Spencer), David Butterfield (Maddie), and Christopher Timmons; and great-grandchildren (Matthew and Elizabeth Hahn, Ava Giorgio, Anniston Butterfield, Jackson Conley-Timmons, and Lennon Timmons).

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Betty Harbison, and sons, Glen Timmons and Alan Timmons.

Memorial Services will be Private.
