Susan Elizabeth Abercrombie-Smith

Susan Elizabeth Abercrombie- Smith, age 75, passed away after an extended illness on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Linda E. White Hospice House, Deaconess Midtown Center.

Susan was born August 1, 1948, in Waco, Texas, the daughter of James Mack and Gladys Abercrombie, both of whom preceded her in death. She was a 1966 graduate of Gonzales Texas High School, and received an Associate degree from Blinn College in Brenham, Texas, and a Bachelor’s degree in social work at Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas. Susan began her career in Angleton, Texas. She retired as a senior caseworker in AFDC for the State of Indiana and Xerox for over 40 years.

On November 27, 1981, Susan was wed to Samuel Ray Smith at Corydon, KY UMC in a candlelight ceremony, with Danny Loney and Mary Ann Keng Montgomery as best man and maid of honor. The two of them enjoyed trips to California, Texas, Florida, Louisiana, and Savannah was a favorite destination.

Susan is survived by her loving husband, Samuel R. Smith, of Evansville; brother, John of rural Louisiana; cousins in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Colorado; and her close friend, Ann Keng McIntyre, of Magnolia, Texas.

Susan is preceded in death by her parents, James and Gladys Abercrombie; and first husband, Thomas Rogers in 1978.

Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Lions Club Cemetery in Corydon, KY with Jerry Wright officiating.

She had an interest in cats and reptiles. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to: Vanderburgh Humane Society at 400 Millner Industrial Dr, Evansville, IN 47710.
