Sylvia Gehlhausen Obituary

Sylvia M. (Fischer) Gehlhausen, age 93, of Newburgh, IN, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 11, 2025, at Brickyard Healthcare – Woodlands Care Center.

Sylvia was born October 19, 1931, in Saint Meinrad, IN, to Norbert and Lena (Vaal) Fischer. She was a loving and dedicated housewife. In her later years, she worked at Pearl Laundry, doing alterations. She was an avid dancer, enjoyed sewing and doing alterations, and was an active member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. She loved bowling and was in a bowling league for many years. Sylvia was a member of the Coterie Dance Club, the Eagles Club, the Owls Club, and the American Legion. She celebrated life with a smile and cherished being a mother and nana. She often said that she was most proud of having seven “good kids”.

Sylvia is survived by her daughters, Carla Boham (Daniel) of Littleton, NC and Gina Reece of Winston Salem, NC; sons, Dr. Terry Gehlhausen (Nancy) of Oakland City, IN, Tim Gehlhausen (Kristy) of Newburgh, IN, Lonny Gehlhausen (Kim) of Evansville, IN, Kurt Gehlhausen (Serena) of Newburgh, IN, and Chris Gehlhausen (Denise) of Hutto, TX; sisters, Mary Ziliack of Ferdinand, IN, and Carol Harpenau (Ted) of Indianapolis, IN; brothers, Kenneth Fischer (Sarah) and Stanley Fischer (Patty), both of Ferdinand, IN; sister-in-law, Clara Mae Fischer of St. Anthony, IN; 16 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Sylvia is preceded in death by her first husband of 47 years, Charles H. Gehlhausen, who passed away in 1997; second husband of 9 years, Oscar L. “Big O” Pfeiffer, who passed away in 2010; sister, Pat Albert; brothers, Henry Fischer (Shirley) and Leonard Fischer; and brother-in-law, David Ziliak.

Friends may visit from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. C.S.T., Monday, August 18, 2025, with a Prayer Service beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue, Evansville, IN.

Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. C.S.T. until service time, Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1301 S. Green River Road, Evansville, IN.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. C.S.T., with Father Bernie Etienne officiating.

Friends may visit again from 1:30 p.m. until  2:30 p.m. E.S.T., Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at Christ the King Parish, 840 Maryland St. Ferdinand, IN 47532. Burial will be in St. Ferdinand Cemetery, Ferdinand, IN.
