Terry D. Helms

Terry D. Helms, also known as Officer Friendly, age 78, of Evansville, IN, passed away at 6:30 p.m. on January, 26, 2021, at River Pointe Nursing Home.

Terry was born April 9, 1942, in Boonville, IN, to Robert “Chubs” Helms and Myrtle “Toots” (Broshears) Helms. He was a Boonville High School graduate. Terry was an Evansville Police Department officer from June 16, 1966 until his retirement on June 15, 2001. He received the “Officer of the Year” award for his service in 2000.  Terry started the annual Culver Elementary School Christmas Party.

Terry is survived by his daughter, Marci Scheller (Mike); grandchildren, Matt Scheller (Abby), Andrew Scheller (Leslye), and Kevin Scheller (Catherine); four great grandchildren; brother Tony Helms; sister in-laws, Betty Helms and Kate Helms; nephews, Brady Helms, Jeff Helms and Kenny Helms; nieces, Jennifer Melligan and Jerra Helms.

Terry is preceded in death by his parents, Robert “Chubs” and Myrtle “Toots”; his loving wife of 27 years, Mary Helms in 2017; and brother, Jerry Helms.

Private Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 29, 2021, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue with Pastor Andrew Scheller officiating.
