Vickie Leigh (Smith) Held, age 70, Evansville, IN, passed away peacefully Monday, November 11, 2024, at Envive of River City. Vickie was a wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend.
Vickie was born April 28, 1954, in Evansville, IN to the late Robert and Irene (Toy) Smith. She was the second of Bob and Irene’s four baby girls.
A 1972 graduate of South Spencer High School, Vickie was active in musical productions, and she was a cheerleader and a yearbook editor. She and her younger sisters took great pride in serving rolls to guests at the Tea Room (Grandview), run by their parents. During this time, Vickie was also an Honored Queen in the Job’s Daughters Bethel 99 Rockport.
During her studies at the University of Evansville, Vickie majored in Journalism and was very active in the Alpha Phi sorority.
Nearly 50 years ago, Vickie began working as a cashier at Levinson’s, where she met a salesman and caught his eye. The feeling was far from mutual, but he eventually proved himself to be a worthy suitor. May 16th, 1981, Vickie Smith became Mrs. Roy Held, although some might argue he was Mr. Vickie Held. Their commitment and devotion to one another was evident to all. It was a love to be envied.
Vickie also worked at Indiana Bell for several years. Eventually she joined Roy’s business endeavors, as co-owner of Held Auto Sales and then traveling together selling “Beats ‘Em All” products at car shows.
Her true calling was apparent when she became a stay-at-home mom to their granddaughter. She delighted in heading up PTA activities, room mother duties, and being a Girl Scout leader with many special years spent at 3 Lakes Camp. One of her proudest accomplishments was co-creating the Stars program with her sister, Suzie.
Vickie was in her element as a hostess to friends and family, welcoming all into her home for holidays and cookouts. Memories created and shared by many will be treasured for years to come.
Perhaps not through blood, but by love, Vickie was a mother to many. A safe harbor. She never met a stranger. As an empty nester, she impacted a whole new set of people building her online family, inviting some of her new friends to town to meet and visit the fall festival together. Need to know something? Vickie is survived by her husband of 43 years, Roy Held; stepdaughter, Kiesha Held of Houston, TX; son by choice, Kris (Kristy) Marshall of Walnut Hill, FL; granddaughters, Alexis Coston of Newburgh, Nova Held of Houston, TX, and Kaylee Marshall of Walnut Hill, FL; sisters (all of Evansville), Bettye Jo (Charlie) Oxley, Terrie Gibbs, and Suzie (John) Todisco; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Vickie is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Irene Smith; and fellow spitfire, mother-in-law, Margaret “Sugar” Held.
