Welby Carpenter Obituary

Welby R. Carpenter, age 92, of Newburgh, IN passed away March 7, 2026, at Evansville Protestant Home..

He was born on October 6, 1933 to Herman and Ila (Burnett) Carpenter, in Gilmer, Texas. He graduated from Grayville Highschool, where he played football, baseball and basketball. The basketball team won the Little Ten Conference Basketball Tournament in 1951. Upon completion of high school, Welby enrolled in Southern Illinois University from where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. He served with the US Army from 1954 to 1956. His working career was with General Electric in the Finance Dept. Office being located in Massachusetts. He retired from G.E. in Mt. Vernon, Indiana.

He was a past member and President of Western Hills CC, in Mt. Vernon, IN. He also was a member of Theta Xi fraternity, Kennel Club, Evansville Duplicate Bridge Club, Rolling Hills CC, and the American Legion Kapperman Post 44. Welby was a great sport enthusiast and he dearly loved his Chicago Cubs and Bears. He was an avid golfer having 7 holes-in-one.

He is survived by his wife Lynda (Wilhelmus) Carpenter. Daughter Kimberly (Pat) Shelton, of Gainesville, VA. Granddaughter Ashley (Gerald) Murphy, of Woodbridge, VA and their children, Daxton and Bexley. Grandson Drew (Cassandra) Shelton of Rocky Mount, VA and their children, Turner and Henry.

Stepdaughter, Alyson Anderson of New Albany, IN. Step grandson Hunter (Leah) Anderson of Sellersburg, IN and their children Chesson, Palmer and Shephard.

Step granddaughter, Hadley Anderson of New Albany, IN and her children Chandler and Savannah. Sisters-in-law, Jane (Duey) Hoff of Rockford, IL, Susan (Robert) Swain of Arlington, Texas. Many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Welby was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Beverly and his sister Virginia Osborne of Longview, Texas.

The family would like to thank the Drs., Nurses, Heart to Heart and staff at the Protestant Home for their loving and compassionate care of Welby.

Funeral Services will be held at 11: 30 a.m., Friday, March  20, 2026, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel – A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Avenue with Chaplain Scott Hutchinson officiating, and The Kapperman Post 44 rendering military honors. Private Burial will be in Little Wabash Cemetery in White Co, Illinois.

Friends may visit from 10 a.m. until time of service, Friday, March 20, 2026, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel.
